Gaia Masetti got her first ever podium in a UCI  race today in Dwars door de Westhoek. The 20-year old Italian sprinted to a third place behind her compatriot Chiara Consonni and Sofie van Rooijen.

This year’s edition of Dwars door de Westhoek was a very wet one for Gaia, Eline van Rooijen, Maureen Arens, Amber Aernouts, Mylène de Zoete, Britt Knaven and Lone Meertens.

“The race was really hectic with a lot of crashes and nervousness. As a team we rode well at the narrow points and we made sure we were at the front then. We also tried to go for breakaways but we knew the race was normally going to be decided in a sprint.

My work today was to be at the front, stay safe and be ready for the sprint. Jolien told me to be among the first five riders in the last corner. It would mean I would be on the podium, she said. And this is exactly what happened!

I am so happy with my very first UCI podium. I really needed this mentally as well. Now I feel more motivated than ever before to go racing and to show what my AG Insurance-NXTG teammates and I are able to!”
